5. For the Right to Life and Democracy.

After the holocaust of the Palace of Justice in which the Supreme Court was sacrificed and the government completely ignored the International Humanitarian Law rules by paying deaf ears to the petition of the Committee to stop the assault on the palace by the army made by the president of the IHL and member of the committee Alfonso Reyes Echandia, the government went back in the search for the political solutions and chose repressive measures in response to popular demands. This aggravated the violence, since then generalized to a dirty war and revealed in the increase in murders, massacres, disappearances, and paramilitary groups, in which the right to life is almost non-existent and democracy is a simple formality.
At this time the Committee fought for the right to life and the dismantling of paramilitary groups as well as the reconstruction and strengthening of the justice system as a way of preventing the complete collapse of democracy.
There were during this time attempts to thwart the Committee's activities through the assassination of its members: Jose Cardona Hoyos, founder and member of the Committee in its Valle del Cauca section, Pedro Nel Jimenez Obando, President of the Meta section of the Committee, and Sotero Escobar, president of the Arauca section.
